For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points. A couple of days ago we saw an Amex Offer that could save you money on Delta, and now there’s an offer that can save you money on another airline.

With this new, targeted Amex Offer, you can receive a $40 statement credit when you spend $200 in one or more transactions with JetBlue by November 20, 2018. This is essentially an opportunity to save 20% on the cost of a JetBlue flight, which is great.

You can potentially do even better than that, as there’s a version of the offer for 4,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend $200. I value Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents each so to me that’s the equivalent of a ~34% return, based on that valuation.

The basic conditions to be aware of are as follows:

  • You need to spend $200, but it can be in multiple transactions
  • The purchase must be be made via, the JetBlue mobile app, or by phone with JetBlue
  • It’s not just flights that qualify, but purchases such as seat upgrades, baggage fees, travel insurance, and pet fees are included if purchased at time of booking; JetBlue Cruises, hotel bookings, car rentals, and some other third party purchases don’t qualify

Let me once again emphasize that this offer is targeted, so not all accounts will be eligible. It actually seems to be fairly narrowly targeted, since across all the accounts I manage, I only see it on two of them.

The ideal situation is that you have this offer on The Platinum Card® from American Express ($550 annual fee), since it offers 5x points on airfare purchased directly with airlines. I value Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents each, so to me that’s the equivalent of an 8.5% return on spend right there.

When you add up both the $40 statement credit and 5x points, you’re potentially looking at some very nice savings. Too bad I don’t see this offer on my Amex Platinum Card, though it obviously could still make sense to book using another card, since the 20% savings are bigger than any points reward you’d otherwise get (assuming your ticket cost isn’t way over $200).

I should also mention that it looks like JetBlue doesn’t sell any gift cards, for those who were wondering if they could get a bit creative.

I continue to be so impressed by how much value Amex Offers adds to Amex cards, as in many cases these offers alone more than justify the annual fees on cards.

Were you targeted for this offer, and if so, do you plan on taking advantage of it?
